Among the hidden gems of Flores trekking is one of the most rarely visited Peaks. Nestled in the southeastern corner of Flores Island, Indonesia, lies a spectacular volcanic duo that’s been captivating adventurers and geologists alike for centuries. Meet the Lewotobi volcanoes – a “husband and wife” pair that offers intrepid hikers a chance to experience the raw power of nature up close and personal.
The Volcanic Power Couple
When talking about the possible treks – Lewotobi isn’t just one volcano, but two distinct peaks:
– Lewotobi Perempuan (“Female Lewotobi”) – standing tall at 1,703 meters
– Lewotobi Lakilaki (“Male Lewotobi”) – reaching 1,584 meters
This could also translate to Bride and Groom. These twin stratovolcanoes are more than just geographical features; they’re an integral part of the local landscape and culture. The name “Lewotobi” itself tells a story, with “Lewo” meaning village and “Tobi” referring to tamarind. It’s as if the mountains themselves are rooted in the essence of the surrounding communities.
A History of Fiery Temperament
Scenic, remote and incredible views…but don’t let their picturesque appearance fool you – these volcanoes have quite the explosive history. With 22 recorded eruptions since 1675, Lewotobi has earned its reputation as one of Indonesia’s most active volcanic systems. The last major eruption was in 2003, but don’t be surprised to witness some seismic grumbling or minor volcanic emissions during your visit. There have been several smaller burps in recent years, many of them being detected early and all trekking is forbidden.
Interestingly, it’s usually the “husband” that causes the most trouble. Lewotobi Lakilaki has been the source of most eruptions, living up to its more temperamental reputation. However, both peaks remain active and closely monitored by local volcanologists
Planning Your Lewotobi Adventure
If you’re up for a challenging trek that rewards you with breathtaking views and a true sense of accomplishment, Lewotobi should be on your Flores itinerary. Here’s what you need to know:
Flores Trekking – Lewotobi – Starting Point
Your journey begins at the Vulcanology Centre in Desa Bawalatang, sitting at 344 meters above sea level. To get there, head to Boru village, located on the main Trans-Flores road between Maumere and Larantuka. From Boru, it’s about a 20-minute drive to the Vulcanology Centre.
This is not simply a starting point. This is also essential – check in with the team to determine the status of the volcanoes. Recent activity, warnings and advice are gladly given. Unless you are on an organized trek (like with Wicked Adventures) you can also organize contact with local guides. A real must for this somewhat challenging but poorly defined trek.
Speaking of challenges, let’s be clear: this isn’t a walk in the park. The route is poorly defined, involves some serious scrambling, and takes 8-10 hours round trip for just one peak. If you’re dreaming of conquering both summits, you’re looking at a two-day expedition. Fitness and determination are your best friends here.
The Ascent: A Tale of Two Peaks
As dawn breaks, you’ll set off from the Volcanology Centre, winding through cocoa plantations and forests. Keep your eyes peeled for the Red-footed Scrub Fowl – a local bird that the guides might mistakenly call “kasawari” (cassowary) in Indonesian. It’s these little quirks that make the journey as fascinating as the destination.
About 4.5 kilometers in, you’ll reach a rocky gully where the path diverges. This is where you’ll need to make a choice: Perempuan or Laki-laki?
Lewotobi Perempuan offers a slightly gentler ascent through eucalyptus groves and ancient lava flows. As you climb, you’ll spot volcanic activity sensors, silent sentinels monitoring the mountain’s moods. The reward for your efforts? A breathtaking view of the main crater with its sulfur-tinged lava dome.
Lewotobi Laki-laki, on the other hand, is a more daunting challenge. The route involves scrambling up loose rocks and navigating a steep scree slope. But the payoff is immense – a mind-boggling view into the volcano’s cavernous crater, a 15-meter wide portal into the earth’s fiery heart
Lewotobi Trekking – Safety First
It’s worth repeating: Lewotobi is an active volcano complex. While the thrill of standing atop these peaks is unparalleled, safety should always be your primary concern. Before embarking on your trek, check with local authorities about current conditions. Volcanic activity can change rapidly, and what’s safe one day might be dangerous the next. On these treks our Guides bring along Satellite phones and check in twice daily with the Vulcanology Center.
Lewotobi – Did you know
These volcanoes have been used as navigational landmarks for…well… a very long time. These surrounding waters were a destination for whaling fleets, after the North Atlantic had been depleted…in the 1880’s. There is, in fact, still a “traditional” Whaling village on the island you can just see from the peaks. It was a visual landmark – the often erupting peak.
But it gets more peculiar – it is featured in a Rudyard Kipling story! “The Disturber of Traffic”, published in 1891. You can ever read the original story in the archives of the Atlantic…
“And on Flores Strait, in the fairway between Adonare Island (Adonara island) and the mainland, they put Dowse (character in story) in charge of a screw-pile Light (house) called the Wurlee Light. It’s less than a mile across the head of Flores Strait. Then it opens out to ten or twelve mile for Solor Strait, and then it narrows again to a three-mile gut, with a topplin’ flamin’ volcano by it. That’s old Loby Toby by Loby Toby Strait, and if you keep his Light and the Wurlee Light in a line you won’t take much harm, not on the darkest night.”
Loby toby…Lowotobi!
Beyond the Summit
The Lewotobi trek isn’t just about conquering peaks; it’s a journey through a lesser-known part of Indonesia. The southeastern region of Flores sees few tourists, which means you’ll have a more authentic experience. From the summit, on a clear day, you can see across the Flores Strait to Solor Island, a view that puts the region’s volcanic landscape into perspective. the very straits mentioned in Kipling’s story.
A Final Word on Lewotobi Trekking
Flores Trekking – and Lewotobi is an experience that will stay with you long after you’ve left Flores. It’s a chance to challenge yourself, to witness the raw power of nature, and to explore a part of Indonesia that many travelers overlook. So, if you’re looking for an adventure that combines natural wonders, cultural insights, and a good dose of adrenaline, set your sights on Lewotobi.
